HOW DO I WORK?

Choosing to get help often feels like a courageous and difficult decision, especially if you haven't had any therapy before. I work relationally and at the heart of this approach is the understanding that we exist in relationship; both with ourselves and also with others. Therefore the relationship between the therapist and client is absolutely paramount in helping you achieve what you want from therapy. My aim as your therapist would be to develop a deep understanding of you as an individual - as a unique person before the problem or concern that bought you along - and to develop a secure and trusting therapeutic relationship with you. Putting words to your experiences alongside someone else trained to help you understand your thoughts, feelings, behaviours, patterns and relationships is part of what helps make change possible and have a lasting impact.

Evidence suggests that the therapeutic relationship, over the type of therapy used, is what contributes to real and lasting change in people's lives. I am trained as an integrative therapist, which means that I understand different approaches to therapy and am able to combine these approaches in a way that suits what you need. These approaches include psychodynamic psychotherapy (thinking about how your past influences your present), person-centred/humanistic (having you as the individual leading the therapy and what you want from it) and cognitive-behavioural therapy (considering how your feelings, thoughts and behaviours interact to impact the person that you are today). I am also trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), a recommended treatment for trauma.

As part of working in this way, I will invite you to regularly review our work together so that it feels the right balance of supportive and challenging, and also to help you make the decision about how long you feel you need therapy for. Both of these things are of course related to what you want out of therapy and we will work out what your goals are from the beginning.

I offer an initial free telephone consultation. This will give you a sense of how I work so that you can decide if I am the right therapist for you.
